Per due anni Benno Steinegger ha condotto interviste con persone molto diverse intorno al medesimo oggetto: se stesso. L’invito e la richiesta erano molto semplici: “descrivimi". Le risposte sono state varie ed eterogenee, come eterogenei erano i parametri di riferimento degli intervistati: dal medico di famiglia, che utilizza come metro le analisi del sangue del paziente, alla madre - che ripercorre la biografia del figlio - fino ad uno sciamano che ne ricostruisce il profilo in base alle sue visioni spirituali. Il confronto con queste interviste è diventato un viaggio alla ricerca di un’identità, della propria identità: Chi sono io? Chi posso essere al di là della mia percezione?
Il punto di partenza di i (to be defined) è questo percorso di ricostruzione del proprio io attraverso gli occhi degli altri, questa auto-inchiesta che intende mette in discussione i confini dell'identità facendone esplodere le infinite prospettive. Attraverso l'esperimento con il proprio corpo, l'uso della voce e di lingue (“maggiori” e “minoritarie”) differenti, l’analisi del suono, il fine è quello di condurre l’auto-inchiesta verso un’indagine delle possibilità profonde di cambiamento di una persona.
Come Parsifal, che dopo aver ascoltato la propria descrizione dall’eremita Trevrizent riesce finalmente a trovare il Sacro Graal, così ciascuno di noi può realizzare il proprio io solo dopo averne conosciuto tutti i lati – anche quelli più oscuri.

Benno Steinegger has spent two years interviewing a wide range of people about a common subject: himself. Responses to his request “describe me” were as diverse as the relationships he shared with his subjects: from his physician, who spoke about his blood test, to his mother, who went through his biography, to a shaman who based his description of Steinegger on his own spiritual visions. Listening back to those interviews it became clear that this was a journey of discovery of the artist’s own identity: Who am i, who can i be, and how do the viewpoints of external observers differ from the perception i have of myself?
The starting point of i (to be defined) is the reconstruction of Benno’s identity through the eyes of people who know him. This process led to an investigation of the boundaries of his identity, a refusal to take for granted characteristics which had previously seemed clear and well-defined. By translating this information into physical and vocal exercises, the process attempts to explore the possibility of deep personal transformation.
Just like Parsifal, who found the Holy Grail only after listening Trevrizent the hermit’s describe him to himself, we can only discover our true identity after having investigated all aspects of it, including those aspects which are most obscure.

Zwei Jahre lang hat Benno Steinegger mit den verschiedensten Menschen Interviews geführt. Seine Bitte und Aufforderung war immer die gleiche: „Beschreibe mich“. Die Antworten waren so verschieden, wie die befragten Menschen: Der Hausarzt beschrieb ihn anhand seines Blutbildes, seine Mutter anhand seiner Biografie, ein Schamane erstellte sein Profil aufgrund von spirituellen Visionen. Die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Interviews wurde eine Reise auf der Suche nach einer Identität, seiner eigenen: Wer bin ich? Wer kann ich jenseits der eigenen Wahrnehmung sein?
Der Ausgangspunkt von i (to be defined) ist die Neubeschreibung des eigenen Ichs durch den Blick der anderen, eine Selbstbefragung und Infragestellung von Identitätsgrenzen. Durch das Experimentieren mit dem eigenen Körper, die Verwendung von Stimme und verschiedenen Sprachen (auch „Minderheitensprachen“) und die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Klang wird dem Ursprung und den Möglichkeiten von Veränderung im Innersten einer Person nachgeforscht. Ähnlich Parsifal, der erst durch die Beschreibungen des Eremiten Trevrizent den Heiligen Gral findet, kann jeder von uns sein Ich erst erkennen, wenn er alle Seiten von sich kennt – auch die dunkelsten.
